AML check on Metis
Metis Andromeda is an Ethereum layer 2 that uses ordinary 0x addresses and charges network fees in METIS, so a Metis wallet looks identical to an Ethereum one.
A Metis address is the same string as an Ethereum address, but its balance and history on Metis are separate, so an AML check must cover Metis (chain ID 1088) specifically. Withdrawals back to Ethereum through the official bridge involve a 7-day challenge period.
Services that check Metis
How to check a Metis address
- Get the public addressAsk your counterparty for the address they will send from — or copy it from the incoming transaction.
- Pick a service that covers MetisChoose one marked “Supported” in the list above. Make sure your checker scans Metis (chain ID 1088) itself; a clean result for the same address on Ethereum says nothing about its activity on Metis.
- Run the check and read itNeither Tether nor Circle lists Metis as a native network, so any USDT or USDC there is a bridged token; check the token contract before accepting it.
Metis specifics
- Metis Andromeda, the main Metis network, launched on 19 November 2021.[1]
- Metis Andromeda uses chain ID 1088, and network fees are paid in the METIS token, not ETH.[2]
- On 14 March 2024 Metis launched a decentralised sequencer: the job of putting transactions in order moved from a single operator to a pool of sequencer nodes (two at launch), which earn METIS for producing blocks.[3]
- According to L2BEAT, Metis posts its transaction data to Ethereum (using cheaper 'blob' storage since May 2025), and withdrawals to Ethereum through the official bridge wait out a 7-day challenge period.[4]
- Metis's newer network, Hyperion, is documented as testnet-only (chain ID 133717) and is meant to run alongside Andromeda, not replace it.[5]
- L2BEAT warns that Metis's bridge contracts can be upgraded instantly with no delay, so users would have no time to withdraw before a malicious upgrade, which it rates as a critical risk.[6]
- L2BEAT notes there is no way to force a transaction onto Metis if the sequencer goes down, and that only permissioned actors can create fraud-proof challenges.[7]
- L2BEAT classifies Metis under 'Others' rather than as a full rollup and says it does not yet meet even its Stage 0 requirements.[8]

FAQ
Is my Metis address the same as my Ethereum address?
Yes. Metis uses the same 0x address format, so the same address string works on both. Balances and transaction history are separate on each chain, though, so an AML check needs to look at Metis activity specifically.
How long does it take to move funds from Metis back to Ethereum?
Through the official bridge, withdrawals go through a 7-day challenge period before they can be finalised on Ethereum, according to the independent tracker L2BEAT.
What does a 'decentralised sequencer' mean on Metis?
A sequencer is the system that puts transactions in order. Since March 2024 Metis has used a pool of sequencer nodes instead of a single operator. L2BEAT still notes there is no way to force a transaction through if the sequencer stops.
How do I check a Metis address for AML risk?
Copy the public address, open one of the services listed above that supports Metis, and run the check. You never need a seed phrase or private key.
What does “Not verified” mean?
The service claims support somewhere — in marketing copy or a third-party page — but its own docs, pricing or FAQ do not list the network. Treat it as unknown.
