AML check on BNB Chain

How to check a BNB Smart Chain address (including USDT BEP-20) for AML risk and which services actually support BNB Chain.

Address format0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters (EVM)0x4bd1e7a0c3f92b6e8d5a0c1f7b3e9d2a6c8f0e14Example for illustration, not a real address.
Note

Shares the EVM address format with Ethereum. Some checkers only cover Ethereum mainnet, so confirm BNB Chain is on the list before you pay.

For companies: screening tools that list BNB Chain

Enterprise KYT and wallet-screening platforms for exchanges, payment firms and other businesses. Prices are on request and they are not part of our score. “Screening” means the provider’s own page lists BNB Chain for screening or monitoring; “Not verified” means it is listed only for investigations or without detail. How to check a BNB Chain address

  1. Get the public addressAsk your counterparty for the address they will send from — or copy it from the incoming transaction.
  2. Pick a service that covers BNB ChainChoose one marked “Supported” in the list above. Select BNB Chain explicitly — an Ethereum-only check of the same 0x address shows a different history.
  3. Run the check and read itLook at the score and at which categories make it up. One high-risk category matters more than many low ones.
A real AML check needs only a public address. Never share a seed phrase or private key.

BNB Chain specifics

  • BNB Smart Chain is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine, so Ethereum wallets such as MetaMask and Trust Wallet work with it and addresses look the same.[2]
  • BNB is the token used to pay transaction fees on BNB Smart Chain.[2]
  • TRM Labs attributed 3% of illicit crypto volume in 2024 to BNB Chain.[3]

Who can freeze funds on BNB Chain

  • Tether's own list of supported protocols gives a contract on BNB Smart Chain only for XAU₮ (gold). It does not list a USD₮ contract on BNB Smart Chain.[4]
  • The verified source code of the token at contract 0x55d3…7955 on BNB Smart Chain (named BEP20USDT in its source) has an owner-only mint function. It has no blacklist, freeze or pause function, and Sourcify does not mark it as an upgradeable proxy. So the token contract itself offers no issuer freeze. Exchanges and other services can still hold or freeze funds they control.[5]

Scams seen on BNB Chain

  • A Carnegie Mellon study of Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain found that address-poisoning attackers fill victims' histories with tiny transfers, zero-value transfers and transfers of counterfeit tokens from look-alike addresses, so the victim later copies the wrong one.[6]
  • The same study found far more attacks on BNB Smart Chain than on Ethereum and links this to lower fees. Some attacker groups reused the same look-alike addresses on both chains, since one 0x address works on every EVM chain.[6]

Check the history yourself

  • BNB Smart Chain mainnet uses chain ID 56 and BscScan (bscscan.com) as its explorer, according to BNB Chain's docs.[7]
  • To check a transfer, BNB Chain's docs say to enter the wallet address or transaction hash on BscScan and confirm the transaction succeeded, went to the right address and is on the right network. A token sent on BNB Smart Chain does not show up under Ethereum or opBNB.[8]
  • BNB Chain's docs advise adding a token to a wallet only with the official contract address from a trusted source, such as BscScan or the project team.[8]

Sanctions and enforcement cases

  • In August 2022 the US SEC charged 11 people over Forsage, which it called a fraudulent pyramid and Ponzi scheme that raised more than $300 million. The SEC says investors entered through smart contracts on the Ethereum, Tron and Binance blockchains.[9]

In numbers

  • Between July 2022 and June 2024, the Carnegie Mellon researchers counted over 252 million poisoning transfers on BNB Smart Chain, including 141 million zero-value transfers and 108 million counterfeit-token transfers.[6]
  • In the same period the study confirmed 4,895 payments from 4,004 victims to attackers on BNB Smart Chain, about $4.5 million in total. The median loss was $85, and the authors call their figures a conservative lower bound.[6]

Common risks on BNB Chain

FAQ

Is USDT BEP-20 checked the same way as ERC-20?

The address looks identical, but the history is different. Use a service that lists BNB Chain and select it.

Can Tether freeze USDT on BNB Chain the way it does on TRON?

Tether's supported-protocols page does not list a USD₮ contract on BNB Smart Chain. The verified code of the main USDT-named token there (0x55d3…7955) has no blacklist or freeze function. Exchanges and other services can still hold or freeze funds they control.

I got a zero-value USDT transfer from an address that looks like mine. What is it?

Most likely address poisoning. Researchers counted over 140 million zero-value poisoning transfers on BNB Smart Chain in two years. Do not copy addresses from your history; check the full address each time.

I sent tokens on BNB Chain to the wrong address. Can I get them back?

Only if you control that address, or if its owner agrees to send them back. BNB Chain's docs say there is no other way to retrieve them.

How do I check a BNB Chain address for AML risk?

Copy the public address, open one of the services listed above that supports BNB Chain, and run the check. You never need a seed phrase or private key.

What does “Not verified” mean?

The service claims support somewhere — in marketing copy or a third-party page — but its own docs, pricing or FAQ do not list the network. Treat it as unknown.
