Polygon specifics
Who can freeze funds on Polygon
- Circle's USDC terms say Circle can block USDC addresses it links to illegal activity. If the address is one Circle custodies, it can also freeze the USDC there, for a time or for good.[4]
- The same terms let Circle block USDC transfers to and from an address on chain, under its blocklisting policy. The terms do not name individual networks.[4]
- Circle says it may freeze USDC sent to or received from a blocked address and may close the Circle account involved.[4]
- Circle lists one contract for native USDC on Polygon PoS: 0x3c499c542cEF5E3811e1192ce70d8cC03d5c3359. Before you accept USDC, check that the token contract matches this address.[5]
- In September 2023, Circle said native USDC would launch on Polygon PoS on 10 October. The older bridged token, USDC.e (contract 0x2791bca1f2de4661ed88a30c99a7a9449aa84174), is a different token. Circle said that from 10 November it would stop supporting USDC.e deposits and withdrawals in Circle accounts, and that USDC.e sent there after that may not be recoverable.[6]
- In a post dated 27 August 2025, Polygon Labs said USDT on Polygon has been upgraded to USDT0, the omnichain deployment of USDT. It said users don't need to take any action.[7]
- OpenZeppelin audited the USDT0 token contract on Polygon. It reports a role that maintains a blocklist, plus an admin role that can destroy the funds of blocked users.[8]
- Tether's terms of service let Tether freeze Tether tokens held by a user and blacklist addresses that hold them.[9]
Scams seen on Polygon
- The FBI warns about fake liquidity-mining apps. A pop-up that mirrors your wallet app asks you to approve permissions. Approving them can let scammers take an unlimited amount from the wallet without your permission or notice.[10]
- The FBI advises using a third-party token allowance checker from time to time, to see whether you have given sites or apps access to your wallet by mistake.[10]
- Polygonscan says a growing number of airdrop tokens show up in addresses. Some are 'Frozen Drop' tokens. You cannot move these until you complete whitelisting or registration steps set by the token creator.[11]
Check the history yourself
- On Polygonscan, wallet addresses and contract addresses look the same: 42 hexadecimal characters. Polygonscan shows a 'Contract Creation' field only for contracts.[12]
- Polygonscan only shows activity on Polygon. Funds sent on another network will not show up at the same 0x address there, so check that the sender used Polygon.[12]
- With a free Polygonscan account, you can add up to 50 addresses to a watch list. You get an email for each incoming or outgoing transaction.[13]
- Polygon's documentation publishes the contract addresses of stablecoins on Polygon PoS. Use it to check the token contract shown on Polygonscan. For example, it lists USDT0 at 0xc2132D05D31c914a87C6611C10748AEb04B58e8F.[14]
Sanctions and enforcement cases
- In March 2025, US prosecutors in Massachusetts sought forfeiture of stablecoins held by Gotbit Consulting. Gotbit had agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy to commit market manipulation and to wire fraud. The complaint says part of the USDC was on Polygon.[15]
