Issuer freezes

Tether, the issuer, can freeze USDT at specific addresses. An AML score cannot undo an issuer freeze.

What to know about USDT TRC-20

  • Tether says it can restrict USDT in wallets linked to illicit activity and follows OFAC sanctions guidance. On 23 April 2026 it reported having supported freezes of more than USD 4.4 billion across over 2,300 cases.[1]
  • The T3 Financial Crime Unit, set up by TRON, Tether and TRM Labs in September 2024, said in May 2026 that it had frozen more than USD 450 million.[2]
  • TRM Labs attributed 58% of illicit crypto volume in 2024 to TRON, and found that 32% of TRON’s illicit volume involved blocklisted funds.[3]

FAQ

Can USDT TRC-20 be frozen in my wallet?

Yes. Tether can restrict USDT at an address at the contract level. It says it does this for wallets linked to illicit activity and in coordination with law enforcement.

Does a low AML score mean my USDT cannot be frozen?

No. A score estimates risk from past transactions. It does not bind Tether, an exchange or law enforcement.

Is USDT TRC-20 the same as USDT ERC-20?

Same token, different networks with separate histories. Check on the network you are receiving on.

We never ask for seed phrases or private keys. An AML check needs only a public address. Anyone who asks for your seed phrase to “verify” a wallet is trying to steal it.
