AML check on Filecoin

Filecoin is a blockchain where users pay storage providers in FIL to store data. Addresses start with f0 to f4, and FEVM accounts can also appear as Ethereum-style 0x addresses.

Address formatMainnet addresses start with f0–f4 (f1/f3 wallets, f410… for Ethereum-style accounts) · base32 with a checksumf1iohn2vk2p573cvky6efc6c77x573v4zo3wc6z5xExample for illustration, not a real address.
Note

An f410f... address and its 0x equivalent are the same account, so treat a check on either form as a check on that one account. Some exchanges still don't support sending FIL to f4/0x addresses, so confirm with the exchange before withdrawing to one.

How to check a Filecoin address

  1. Get the public addressAsk your counterparty for the address they will send from — or copy it from the incoming transaction.
  2. Pick a service that covers FilecoinChoose one marked “Supported” in the list above. If you have an f410f... or 0x address, look it up on a Filecoin block explorer: both spellings point to the same account.
  3. Run the check and read itBefore withdrawing FIL from an exchange to a 0x or f4 address, check the exchange supports that address type.
A real AML check needs only a public address. Never share a seed phrase or private key.

Filecoin specifics

  • Filecoin is a storage network: storage providers (SPs) store files and data for clients and submit cryptographic proofs that they are still storing it.[1]
  • FIL is used to pay storage providers for storing data, to reward providers who validate and add new blocks, and for participation in network governance.[2]
  • Smart contracts went live on Filecoin mainnet on 14 March 2023 (epoch 2,683,348, 3:14 PM UTC), with an Ethereum-compatible runtime (the FEVM) as the first supported runtime.[3]
  • An f4 (f410) address has an automatic 0x equivalent you can look up on a block explorer, and some exchanges are still implementing support for sending FIL to f4 addresses.[4]
  • Ethereum-style wallets do not recognise Filecoin's f1, f2 or f3 address formats, so Filecoin provides a smart contract called FilForwarder to move FIL from an f4 address to those address types.[5]

FAQ

Is an f410 address the same as a 0x address?

Yes. Filecoin's docs say each f410 address is equivalent to an 0x address, and Ethereum addresses can be converted to f410 addresses and back. They are two ways of writing the same account.

Why won't my exchange let me withdraw FIL to my 0x (MetaMask) address?

Filecoin's docs note that some exchanges are still implementing support for f4 addresses, so a withdrawal to an f4/0x address may be rejected. Ask the exchange whether it supports f4/0x withdrawals before sending.

What do the f0, f1, f2, f3 and f4 prefixes mean?

'f' means mainnet ('t' is testnet) and the digit is the address type: 0 is a short numeric ID, 1 is a secp256k1 wallet, 2 is an actor (contract-style) address, 3 is a BLS wallet, and 4 is a delegated address, with f410 used for Ethereum-style accounts. The docs warn that f0 IDs are not re-org stable until the chain has settled.

How do I check a Filecoin address for AML risk?

Copy the public address, open one of the services listed above that supports Filecoin, and run the check. You never need a seed phrase or private key.

What does “Not verified” mean?

The service claims support somewhere — in marketing copy or a third-party page — but its own docs, pricing or FAQ do not list the network. Treat it as unknown.
