AML check on Rootstock
Rootstock is a Bitcoin sidechain whose 0x addresses look like Ethereum's but use a Rootstock-specific checksum; its coin, RBTC, is bridged 1:1 from BTC.
The same 0x string can be valid on Rootstock and on Ethereum, so make sure an AML checker is actually screening Rootstock (chain ID 30) and not another EVM network.
Services that check Rootstock
How to check a Rootstock address
- Get the public addressAsk your counterparty for the address they will send from — or copy it from the incoming transaction.
- Pick a service that covers RootstockChoose one marked “Supported” in the list above. Confirm the recipient expects Rootstock before sending; Rootstock's docs advise not sharing one account across Rootstock, Ethereum and other chains.
- Run the check and read itUSDT and USDC on Rootstock are bridged tokens (USDT0, USDC.e), not issued directly by Tether or Circle, so check which token contract you actually hold.
Rootstock specifics
- RBTC is Rootstock's native coin and is issued 1:1 against BTC locked in the PowPeg, Rootstock's built-in bridge to Bitcoin.[1]
- Moving BTC into Rootstock (peg-in) requires 100 Bitcoin blocks, and moving RBTC back to Bitcoin (peg-out) requires 4,000 Rootstock blocks.[2]
- Rootstock's PowPeg App docs estimate a native peg-in at about 17 hours and a native peg-out at about 34 hours; a peg-in is final and cannot be reversed.[3]
- Transaction fees (gas) on Rootstock are paid in RBTC.[4]
- On 4 October 2022 an attacker exploited Sovryn's legacy lending pools on Rootstock, removing 44.9368 RBTC and 282,351.9644 rUSDT; Sovryn says part was recovered and its treasury covered the rest so users were made whole.[5]
- According to Sovryn's post-mortem, the attacker tried to move about 29 RBTC off Rootstock through the Sovryn bridge to BNB Smart Chain and also attempted PowPeg peg-outs to Bitcoin, which shows that stolen funds on Rootstock may be moved out through bridges.[6]
Common risks on Rootstock
FAQ
Is a Rootstock address the same as an Ethereum address?
It uses the same format (0x plus 40 hex characters), but Rootstock's checksum includes its chain ID (30), so the upper/lower-case pattern can differ from Ethereum's. Rootstock's docs recommend using a separate account for each blockchain.
How long does it take to move BTC to Rootstock and back?
Through the native PowPeg, a peg-in needs 100 Bitcoin blocks (about 17 hours) and a peg-out needs 4,000 Rootstock blocks (about 34 hours), according to Rootstock's documentation.
Is USDT on Rootstock issued by Tether?
No. Tether's supported-protocols page does not list Rootstock, and Circle's native USDC list does not include it either. Rootstock's own token page lists USDT0 and USDC.e as bridged assets.
How do I check a Rootstock address for AML risk?
Copy the public address, open one of the services listed above that supports Rootstock, and run the check. You never need a seed phrase or private key.
What does “Not verified” mean?
The service claims support somewhere — in marketing copy or a third-party page — but its own docs, pricing or FAQ do not list the network. Treat it as unknown.
