AML check on Aptos

Aptos is a layer 1 blockchain built on the Move language; its addresses are 0x plus 64 hex characters, longer than Ethereum's, and it hosts native USDT and USDC.

Address format0x followed by 64 hexadecimal characters (32 bytes) — longer than an Ethereum address0x4cfeba9256a758edb4b77ed7d9e79bd7f3acda60e58a078b4bde8ce979f897bcExample for illustration, not a real address.
Note

An Aptos address starts with 0x like an Ethereum address but is a different format on a different network, so always confirm the network before you send or screen funds. Token balances sit in separate 'store' objects tied to the wallet, so screen the owner's account address, not a store address.

How to check an Aptos address

  1. Get the public addressAsk your counterparty for the address they will send from — or copy it from the incoming transaction.
  2. Pick a service that covers AptosChoose one marked “Supported” in the list above. Paste the full address: 0x followed by 64 hex characters. Under the Aptos address standard, only special system addresses (0x0 to 0xf) are shown in short form, so if your address is shorter, check you copied all of it.
  3. Run the check and read itChoose a checker that lists Aptos as a supported network. A tool that accepts Ethereum 0x addresses does not automatically cover Aptos, and a 0x address with only 40 hex characters is Ethereum-style, not Aptos.
A real AML check needs only a public address. Never share a seed phrase or private key.

Aptos specifics

  • Smart contracts on Aptos are written in Move, a programming language designed to manage and transfer assets securely, and also used on other chains.[1]
  • An Aptos account can change (rotate) the authentication key that controls it, but the account address itself never changes, so the keys behind an address may not be the original ones.[2]
  • With Stateless Accounts (AIP-115), a new Aptos address no longer has to be created on-chain before sending transactions; the account record is created automatically when it is first needed.[3]
  • Under Aptos's Fungible Asset standard, a token's balance for each account sits in a 'primary store' whose address is derived from the account address and the token's metadata address, so the store address differs from the wallet address.[4]
  • The Fungible Asset standard includes a 'TransferRef' capability that lets whoever holds it freeze accounts from transferring that token, or bypass an existing freeze.[5]
  • Chainalysis reports that a North Korea-linked group (tracked by Google as UNC5342), which targets job-seeking crypto developers with malware, hid encoded pointers in TRON and Aptos transactions that direct infected devices to malware instructions stored on BNB Smart Chain.[6]
  • Chainalysis and the Aptos Foundation announced that addresses the Foundation reports as linked to malicious actors on Aptos will be labelled and integrated into Chainalysis KYT, Chainalysis's transaction-monitoring tool.[7]

Common risks on Aptos

FAQ

Why does my Aptos address look different from my Ethereum address?

Both start with 0x, but an Aptos address is 32 bytes (64 hex characters after 0x), while an Ethereum address is 20 bytes (40 hex characters). The Aptos address standard (AIP-40) does not specify a built-in checksum, so check addresses carefully before sending.

Can a token issuer freeze tokens on Aptos?

The Aptos Fungible Asset standard includes a capability called TransferRef that lets whoever holds it freeze accounts from transferring that token. Whether a particular issuer kept and uses that power depends on the token, so check the issuer's own documentation.

Do AML checkers have data on Aptos?

Some do. Chainalysis has announced that addresses the Aptos Foundation reports as linked to malicious actors are labelled in Chainalysis KYT, its monitoring tool. Coverage differs between checkers, so confirm Aptos is supported before relying on a result.

How do I check a Aptos address for AML risk?

Copy the public address, open one of the services listed above that supports Aptos, and run the check. You never need a seed phrase or private key.

What does “Not verified” mean?

The service claims support somewhere — in marketing copy or a third-party page — but its own docs, pricing or FAQ do not list the network. Treat it as unknown.
