AML check on Zcash
Zcash (ZEC) has public transparent addresses that work like Bitcoin, plus optional shielded addresses that encrypt the sender, receiver and amount.
Wallet checks work best on transparent addresses (t1, t3, tex1), because their history is public. Fully shielded activity is encrypted on-chain, so a checker can tell you little about it unless the owner shares a viewing key.
Services that check Zcash
How to check a Zcash address
- Get the public addressAsk your counterparty for the address they will send from — or copy it from the incoming transaction.
- Pick a service that covers ZcashChoose one marked “Supported” in the list above. If an exchange gives you a deposit address starting with tex1, it is meant to receive funds only from transparent addresses. Check that your wallet supports it before you send.
- Run the check and read itIf you need to show where shielded funds came from, for example to an exchange or an auditor, you can share a viewing key. It gives read-only access and cannot spend your coins.
Zcash specifics
- Transactions between two transparent Zcash addresses work like Bitcoin: the sender, receiver and amount are publicly visible on the blockchain.[1]
- A fully shielded (z-to-z) transaction encrypts the sender address, receiver address and amount, so they are not readable on the public blockchain.[2]
- When funds move between transparent and shielded addresses, part of the transaction stays visible: shielding reveals the amount on the sender's side and deshielding reveals it on the receiver's side.[3]
- The owner of a shielded address can voluntarily share a viewing key with a trusted third party, such as an auditor; it gives read access to transaction details but cannot spend funds.[4]
- Unified Addresses (ZIP-316, starting u1) can combine Orchard, Sapling and transparent receivers in one address, and the same standard defines matching Unified Full and Incoming Viewing Keys (prefixes uview and uivk).[5]
- In January 2024 Zcash developers defined TEX addresses (ZIP-320, starting tex1), which should only receive funds from transparent addresses; the proposal says this was a response to Binance's need to trace deposits to their source.[6]
- OKX suspended ZEC deposits on 27 December 2023, removed its ZEC-USDT, ZEC-USDC and ZEC-BTC spot pairs on 5 January 2024, and suspended ZEC withdrawals from 5 March 2024, saying the pairs did not meet its listing criteria.[7]
- Binance added ZEC to its Monitoring Tag list on 4 January 2024. The tag warns of higher risk and possible delisting, and users must pass a quiz every 90 days to keep trading tagged tokens.[8]
- Tether does not list Zcash among the blockchains that USDT is or was issued on.[9]
- Circle does not list Zcash among the blockchains where native USDC is available.[10]
- Chainalysis reported that DPRK-attributed hackers stole $387 million from the exchange Bitget. In its breakdown of how the stolen funds moved across blockchains, Zcash made up 7.6%, behind Ethereum (49.7%) and XRP (40.8%) and ahead of Tron (1.8%).[11]
- In 2020 Elliptic said it had observed very little adoption of Zcash by illicit entities, and that most Zcash transactions were fully visible on the blockchain, like bitcoin transactions.[12]

FAQ
Can an AML checker see my shielded Zcash transactions?
Not in the usual way. A fully shielded transaction encrypts the sender, receiver and amount. Transparent addresses are different: their sender, receiver and amount are public, like Bitcoin, so checkers can analyse them.
What is a Zcash viewing key?
It is a key that the owner of a shielded address can choose to share with a trusted third party. It gives read access to that address's transaction details but cannot be used to spend funds.
Can I still trade ZEC on big exchanges?
It depends on the exchange and your region. OKX removed its ZEC trading pairs on 5 January 2024. Binance kept ZEC listed but put it under a 'Monitoring Tag' in January 2024. Check your exchange's current announcements before you deposit.
How do I check a Zcash address for AML risk?
Copy the public address, open one of the services listed above that supports Zcash, and run the check. You never need a seed phrase or private key.
What does “Not verified” mean?
The service claims support somewhere — in marketing copy or a third-party page — but its own docs, pricing or FAQ do not list the network. Treat it as unknown.
