AML check on Bitcoin SV

Bitcoin SV (BSV) addresses start with 1 and use the same format as Bitcoin addresses, so check which network you're on as carefully as the address itself.

Address formatStarts with 1 — the same format as Bitcoin; 3… (P2SH) addresses no longer receive new funds since the 2020 Genesis upgrade1SajQH63ZkMvouaGqfKuB3bUxTGKbbP41pExample for illustration, not a real address.
Note

The same address string can be valid on both Bitcoin (BTC) and BSV, so an AML check or a wallet can only tell you about the network you actually select. Some major exchanges, including Kraken in 2019, have delisted BSV, so check that the receiving platform supports BSV before you send.

How to check a Bitcoin SV address

  1. Get the public addressAsk your counterparty for the address they will send from — or copy it from the incoming transaction.
  2. Pick a service that covers Bitcoin SVChoose one marked “Supported” in the list above. Before sending, confirm the receiving wallet or exchange lists BSV specifically. An address starting with 1 does not show which network it belongs to.
  3. Run the check and read itIf you're given an address starting with 3 for BSV, check it again. BSV stopped accepting new Pay-to-Script-Hash (P2SH) outputs in its February 2020 Genesis upgrade.
A real AML check needs only a public address. Never share a seed phrase or private key.

Bitcoin SV specifics

  • BSV wallet addresses use the original Bitcoin format. Its node software uses the same address version bytes as Bitcoin Core, so a BSV address can look identical to a valid Bitcoin (BTC) address.[2]
  • Bitcoin Core (BTC) uses the same mainnet address version bytes, 0 for '1…' and 5 for '3…', which is why the formats are interchangeable.[3]
  • BSV does not use the CashAddr format ('bitcoincash:q…') that Bitcoin Cash adopted. The BSV node release v0.2.1 lists 'Remove Bitcoin ABC cashaddr address format'.[4]
  • BSV's Genesis upgrade took effect at block 620,538 on 4 February 2020. It removed Pay-to-Script-Hash (P2SH) and made the block size cap a value that miners configure themselves.[5]
  • The first BSV node release (v0.1.0) added support for a 'November 2018 Upgrade' and set a default maximum accepted block size of 128MB.[6]
  • Kraken announced on 16 April 2019 that it would delist BSV, citing the conduct of the team behind it. Deposits were disabled on 22 April 2019 and trading ended on 29 April 2019. Balances not withdrawn were later converted to BTC on 7 December 2019, minus a 10% fee.[7]
  • Kraken's support page says BSV withdrawals were disabled on 5 June 2019 at 11:59 pm UTC (later than the 31 May date in the original announcement) and that remaining BSV was converted to BTC on 7 December 2019.[8]

FAQ

Is a BSV address the same as a Bitcoin address?

They use the same format. BSV's node software uses the same address version bytes as Bitcoin Core, so the same string can be valid on both networks, and the address alone does not show which network it is meant for.

Does BSV use CashAddr addresses (bitcoincash:q…)?

No. BSV node release v0.2.1 removed the Bitcoin ABC CashAddr format, and the BSV wiki describes BSV addresses as starting with the number 1.

Why don't some exchanges support BSV?

Each exchange makes its own listing decisions. For example, Kraken announced on 16 April 2019 that it would delist BSV, citing the conduct of the team behind it, and ended BSV trading on 29 April 2019.

How do I check a Bitcoin SV address for AML risk?

Copy the public address, open one of the services listed above that supports Bitcoin SV, and run the check. You never need a seed phrase or private key.

What does “Not verified” mean?

The service claims support somewhere — in marketing copy or a third-party page — but its own docs, pricing or FAQ do not list the network. Treat it as unknown.
