AML check on Optimism
OP Mainnet is an Ethereum layer 2 built on the OP Stack. It uses the same 0x address format as Ethereum, and fees are paid in ETH.
An AML check on OP Mainnet covers only OP Mainnet activity. The same 0x address on Ethereum or another EVM chain has its own separate history, so check every network where the funds actually moved.
Services that check Optimism
How to check an Optimism address
- Get the public addressAsk your counterparty for the address they will send from — or copy it from the incoming transaction.
- Pick a service that covers OptimismChoose one marked “Supported” in the list above. Choose OP Mainnet (Optimism) as the network in the checker, not Ethereum. The same address can have a clean history on one chain and a risky one on another.
- Run the check and read itIf the funds arrived through a bridge from Ethereum, check the sending address on Ethereum too, because part of the history may sit on the other chain.
Optimism specifics
- OP Mainnet runs on the OP Stack, an open-source software stack that, according to Optimism, also runs many other production layer-2 chains.[1]
- Withdrawals of ETH and tokens from OP Mainnet to Ethereum through the Standard Bridge cannot be finalised until a 7-day challenge period has passed. Ordinary OP Mainnet transactions are not delayed by this.[2]
- Fees on OP Mainnet are paid in ETH. Each fee is made up of a normal execution gas fee plus an L1 data fee, which covers the cost of publishing the transaction data to Ethereum.[3]
- Circle issues native USDC on OP Mainnet at contract 0x0b2C639c533813f4Aa9D7837CAf62653d097Ff85. The older version bridged from Ethereum was renamed USDC.e on block explorers.[4]
- OP Stack chains are designed to be EVM-equivalent. One difference: when a smart contract on Ethereum sends a transaction to OP Mainnet, the sender address is changed ('aliased') by adding a fixed offset, so it will not match the original Ethereum contract address.[5]
- In June 2022, market maker Wintermute said an attacker took control of 20 million OP tokens sent to it on Optimism. The receiving address was a multisig wallet Wintermute controlled on Ethereum but had not yet deployed on Optimism. The attacker sold 1 million OP for ETH, moved it to Ethereum through the Synapse and Hop bridges, and then used Tornado Cash.[6]
Common risks on Optimism
FAQ
Is my Ethereum address the same on OP Mainnet?
The format is the same (0x plus 40 hexadecimal characters), so the same address can appear on both chains. Each chain keeps its own balances and history, though. A smart-contract wallet on Ethereum may not exist on OP Mainnet, or may be controlled by someone else there: in 2022, Wintermute lost control of 20 million OP sent to an address it controlled only on Ethereum.
How long does a withdrawal from OP Mainnet to Ethereum take?
Through the official Standard Bridge, withdrawals cannot be finalised on Ethereum until a 7-day challenge period has passed. This delay does not apply to ordinary OP Mainnet transactions: Optimism's docs say they usually reach hard finality 15 to 30 minutes after submission.
Is the USDC on OP Mainnet issued by Circle?
Circle issues native USDC on OP Mainnet at contract 0x0b2C639c533813f4Aa9D7837CAf62653d097Ff85. An older version bridged from Ethereum also exists and is labelled USDC.e on block explorers, so check the contract address before you accept or screen a payment.
How do I check a Optimism address for AML risk?
Copy the public address, open one of the services listed above that supports Optimism, and run the check. You never need a seed phrase or private key.
What does “Not verified” mean?
The service claims support somewhere — in marketing copy or a third-party page — but its own docs, pricing or FAQ do not list the network. Treat it as unknown.
